A North Liberty man charged with multiple thefts at a grocery store was allegedly caught doing it again earlier this month.
The manager at the Adli on Highway 965 told police that 57-year-old Steven Van Abbema of Zeller Crossing had committed several thefts between June 7th and July 7th. His method of operation was reportedly using self-checkout and put his card into the card reader but pull it out before payment was made. He would then leave the store with the selected groceries without paying. Over the period, Van Abbema allegedly committed thefts 12 times for a total of over $350.
On September 2nd, Van Abbema reportedly returned, stealing on two occasions before police took him into custody. He took over $100 in groceries over the two visits.
Van Abbema has been convicted of theft twice this year, on July 2nd and 3rd.
He was charged with 3rd and 4th degree theft. If convicted no both counts, Van Abbema could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
