The Knights of Columbus Council 2326 has donated $2,000 to Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake to support its Tornado Pack program, which provides food to local students experiencing food insecurity.
The donation was made through the Knights’ Cans for a Cause grant program, which raises money by collecting and processing redeemable cans and bottles donated by community members. Proceeds from the recycling program are used to support local charitable organizations and initiatives.
The donated funds will help purchase food items for the Tornado Pack program. Each week, volunteers assemble bags of food that are distributed to elementary students at Storm Lake Elementary School and Storm Lake St. Mary’s Catholic Schools.
The program is designed to ensure participating students have food available at home over the weekend when they are not receiving meals at school.
“The generosity of our community through the Cans for a Cause program allows the Knights to support organizations like Lakeside Presbyterian to make a real difference in the lives of children in Storm Lake,” said Alex Berry, biology professor at Buena Vista University and Grand Knight of St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus.
Berry said the Knights are honored to partner with Lakeside Presbyterian and support the Tornado Pack program.
The Knights of Columbus is encouraging community members to continue donating redeemable cans and bottles at its three collection locations: the collection cages in the Hy-Vee and Fareway parking lots and the site across from Sunrise Pointe Golf Course near Laven’s Northwest Monuments.
