The Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the first reading of a proposed ordinance amendment clarifying that sex stereotyping is illegal under the county’s Human Rights ordinance.
The Press-Citizen reports the resolution would add a passage noting that discrimination based on sex stereotypes is illegal according to the local ordinance and Iowa’s Civil Rights Code.
The county’s ordinance directs the county attorney to investigate all complaints of civil rights violations, where a person is penalized based on how they appear, dress, speak, behave or present themselves based on their sex.
The county’s definition of sex stereotype echoes Iowa City’s human rights ordinance that was amended last month.
Two more readings would need to be passed for the ordinance amendment to be enacted.
