Johnson County vaccination rates are currently the lowest they’ve been in recent years.

Iowa Media Wire reports as of October 30th, the flu vaccine rate in the county was just 26.2 percent, compared to last flu season when it was at 42.5 percent.

Local public heath officials say now is the time to get vaccinated, ahead of flu and COVID-19 activity. San Jarvis, Johnson County Public Health community health manager, tells the DI testing for COVID-19 and the flu remains important.

So far this season, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services reports 25 positive cases of Influenza A. Residents are urged to get their COVID-19 vaccination, as it is one of the most effective and safe tools to prevent them from getting sick.

Johnson County has the highest vaccination rate among the top five most populous counties in Iowa, followed by Polk, Black Hawk, Linn and Scott counties.

Iowa Health and Human Services communications director Danielle Sample said Iowans should get their vaccinations now, as the human immune system needs two weeks for the vaccines to fully work.
