A suspect with four previous domestic abuse convictions faces a new felony count of the same charge after a reported altercation in Tiffin.
Surveillance video from the alleged victim’s residence reportedly shows 34-year-old Dedrick Demon Smith of the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip fighting with the alleged victim, knocking her to the floor, and positioning himself to keep her from getting back up. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says Smith has a history of domestic violence at that residence, with two previous convictions each in Iowa and Louisiana. Smith and the alleged victim have two children together but live in different residences.
Smith is now charged with Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense and 3rd Degree Harassment. If convicted on the domestic abuse charge, he faces up to five years in prison.
