The city of Iowa City is investing $1.8 million to support its arts scene through an endowment intended to provide long-term stability.
KCRG TV reports the funding comes from the city’s Local Option Sales Tax revenue that was approved by voters last November.
The City Council approved a partnership with the Community Foundation for Johnson County to administer the funds. Among the organizations that will benefit from the investment include the Englert Theatre, FilmScene, Iowa City Summer of the Arts, Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, Public Space One and Riverside Theater.
Iowa City Economic Development and Public Art Coordinator Rachel Kilburg Varley said establishing the endowment reduces pressure on the general fund, which is being squeezed by state property tax reform.
Andrew Sherburne, executive director of FilmScene, tells TV9 that investment in the arts such as the announced endowment helps create community programming and supports economic vitality.
