Cedar Rapids Police Chief David Dostal is set to retire.
Sources say the issue is on the agenda for today’s City Council meeting. In the packet released ahead of the meeting, it says “David Dostal is retiring from the City of Cedar Rapids as set forth in the agreement.” As part of the agreement, Dostal is getting a payment of over $191.000, which includes six months salary, accrued and unused flex leave and COBRA coverage.
Dostal’s official retirement date is early 2027.
The full agreement was not attached to the council agenda, nor was there any information about an interim or replacement chief. City Manager Jeff Pomeranz says the city will move to hire a search firm in the near future. Additional details will be made available later today.
Dostal was appointed chief in February 2024. He replaced former police chief Wayne Jerman, who lost eligibility to serve due to his age, under Iowa law. Dostal has been a Cedar Rapids police officer since 1991.
