11 of the 13 out-of-state members of the advisory council for the University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom have resigned in a vote of “no confidence” in the Iowa Board of Regents.
The group was led by committee chair Richard Lowery, who also serves as an associate professor at the University of Texas.
Lowery butted heads with the Regents last week after they insisted that a search committee tasked with finding a new permanent director for the center should meet this week. Lowery balked at that request, claiming that the regents had no authority to schedule search committee meetings.
Lowery was told to “get on board” with the Regents or resign.
In an email to the Regents sent on Monday, Lowery said he had no faith in their leadership and he and ten other members of the advisory council have resigned, leaving mostly only Iowans on the 26-member committee.
