Two buildings collapsed in Muscatine early Saturday morning.
Abandoned structures at 201 and 203 East 2nd Street collapsed just after midnight during heavy rain. The collapse was captured on video by The Coffee Belt across the street. No injuries were reported.
Last month the City of Muscatine inspected 20 buildings in the affected area. Engineers determined that 17 structures required repairs due to structural instability. Most of the affected buildings were located in the 200 block of East 2nd Street. In response, the city closed the intersection at 2nd Street and Sycamore Street to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic…specifically due to the condition of the two buildings that collapsed Saturday morning. The buildings were ordered evacuated last November due to deteriorating conditions.
