Newton was one of 59 cities tied for 24th place among 82 Iowa cities with at least one BBB Scam Tracker report in June 2026, logging one scam report, according to Better Business Bureau.
That compared with two reports in the previous month.
The report listed a $27.95 loss from an online purchase scam tied to a TikTok advertisement and an order that was not fulfilled.
BBB Scam Tracker lets consumers search reported scams and share their experiences to help others spot similar schemes. The BBB says it reviews each report before publication and does not publicly display the reporter’s name or personal contact information.
Fraud reports continue to show large financial losses nationwide. The Federal Trade Commission said consumers reported losing more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year.
