A new trial date has been set for two teens accused in April’s Ped Mall shootings.
18-year-old Damarian Jones and Ka’Mari Dozier, both of Cedar Rapids, waived their right to a speedy trial, and their original August 18th trial has been rescheduled to January 26th.
Lawyers for the two requested that they be tried separately, but a judge ruled against them.
Jones is charged with five counts of attempted murder, five counts of willful injury and one count of going armed with intent. Dozier also faces five counts of attempted murder for allegedly supplying the gun to Jones.
The initial fight, which started around 1:45am on April 19th, involved about 40 people. Police Chief Dustin Liston said Jones was reportedly involved in the fight, obtained a firearm and shot into a crowd. None of the wounded were targeted by Jones.
The Press-Citizen reports court documents indicate both Jones and Dozier will claim self defense at their trials.
