The Iowa City Community School District has approved the exhibits they will submit to a state financial oversight committee ahead of their October 7th meeting in the state capital.
The Gazette reports last week, the school board approved five exhibits to be submitted to the School Budget Review Committee, or SRBC. The exhibits include an action plan to correct findings in the 2024 Fiscal Year audit, which was received months past the state’s deadline, and a five year financial projection that builds in a 2 percent increase in state aid each year, a reduction of an estimated 36 students each year, projected salaries and benefits, and millions of dollars in budget cuts.
The District has already cut $7.5 million in expenses from this fiscal year’s budget, and expect to cut another $7.83 million from the fiscal year 2027 budget. A redrawing of school attendance boundaries is being discussed to help reduce costs.
The SRBC is an independent state agency consisting of the director of the Iowa Department of Education, the director of the Iowa Department of Management and four members appointed by the governor who are knowledgeable n school finance or public finance issues.
