A convicted Johnson County sex offender is back behind bars after allegedly violating the state’s sex offender registry.
42-year-old James Hammel…who lists addresses in both Williamsburg and West Amana…was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 1:45 Sunday morning. Hammel allegedly committed a second offense violation of the registry in Iowa County on July 12th, with online documents accusing him of absconding from custody.
Hammel was convicted of Indecent Contact With a Child after a 2021 incident at his former residence on 565th Street south of Hills. He alleged committed sex acts on a girl under the age of 14. Hammel was given a two-year suspended sentence and placed on the sex offender registry for ten years.
