A traffic stop for an equipment violation led to multiple charges against a Keokuk man.
Saturday evening around 9pm 40-year-old Franz Dunsworth was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy on Park Road in Solon because his vehicle reportedly was making excessive engine noise and his muffler was defective. Upon contact, Dunsworth allegedly identified himself using his brother’s name.
He was reportedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of ingested alcohol. After field tests showed signs of impairment, Dunsworth agreed to a PBT showing his breath-alcohol level at .135 percent. A Datamaster test measured it at .130 percent.
A subsequent search of Dunsworth’s vehicle allegedly discovered a marijuana pipe containing burnt marijuana residue, two empty tall-boy beer cans, and open containers of alcohol.
A check of Dunsworth’s driving record showed his status as barred and his vehicle was not equipped with the required ignition interlock device. He also had a prior OWI third or subsequent offense, and a conviction for marijuana possession.
Dunsworth was charged with OWI third or subsequent offense, operating without interlock, marijuana possession, malicious prosecution, driving while barred, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for loud muffler and an open container violation. If convicted on all counts, Dunsworth could be sentenced to over ten years in prison.
