A Coralville man faces felony charges after allegedly brandishing a firearm and threatening to shoot people.
The incident occurred just before 12:20am Sunday at the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street. According to the police report, 29-year-old Brandon Gillams of Coral Court got into an argument with people and pointed a firearm at a victim, telling them he was going to start shooting people.
Following that incident, Gillams reportedly barricaded himself inside an apartment at the complex. He eventually exited the residence and surrendered to officers.
Video footage of the incident corroborated the testimony of the witness. It also allegedly showed Gillams assault his significant other outside their shared apartment, smashing out the rear window of their vehicle, and pointing his firearm at her and others.
Search warrants were obtained, and police recovered a firearm described by witnesses that was allegedly used in the assault.
Police say Gillams was visibly intoxicated when they arrested him, and he reportedly told them he had been drinking since 10am that morning.
A check of his criminal record showed a previous felony robbery conviction out of Cook County Illinois.
Gillams faces multiple charges, including intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, assault while participating in a felony, dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, carrying weapons while intoxicated, 1st degree harassment, interference with official acts, domestic abuse assault with the display or use of a weapon, public intoxication, and person ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon. If convicted on all counts, Gillams could be sentenced to up to over 26 years in prison.
