Democratic candidates appeared at the annual Polk County Democrats Steak Fry fundraiser Saturday, as speakers discussed issues like water quality and government accountability.
The Gazette reports US Representative Jamie Raskin appeared at the event and spoke about problems with the Trump administration that he believes need to change. He discussed the economy, religion, and freedom of the press.
Raskin called out the administration for its attack on late-night comedians, saying they limit the freedom of the press guaranteed in the Constitution. He also said the separation of church and state was under attack, with Republicans asking to restore prayer in school.
Raskin also criticized Trump administration moves that have overlooked Congress’ authority, including declaring war on Iran, appropriating funds and regulating commerce through that war, cutting USAID, and waging an ongoing trade war with China.
He said he was in Iowa because he believed voters could help change the direction of the country.
Gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand also spoke at the event, saying that Iowans are struggling with a tough economy, sky high cancer rates, and an education system that is now in the bottom half of the country.
US Senate candidate Josh Turek said if elected, he would fight for accessible healthcare, affordable prescriptions, public school funding, and women’s reproductive freedom. He said he would also combat corruption in both parties.
