A barbed-wire fence installed by a homeowner near Lucas Elementary in Iowa City has been removed after the city said it was a public safety hazard.

The fence stood along a sidewalk at the corner of Muscatine Avenue and Southlawn Drive, next to Lucas and Willowind School. The homeowner told KCRG TV 9 that the fence was put up for safety. They said children would walk along the ledge of the retaining wall and that their home and white picket fence had been vandalized and they contacted the city with their concerns.

The city said the fence was in the public right of way and called it a safety hazard. The homeowner removed the fence earlier this week, but still says they have concerns about children on their property.
