The town of Fennimore and all Southwest Wisconsin is dealing with some potentially difficult economic news today. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has announced Energizer is planning on closing their battery plants in Fennimore and another in Portage, Wisconsin in the next 12 to 24 months which would affect around 600 union employees. According to the press release, the Teamsters say Energizer told them Energizer told workers and Teamster representatives it plans to send some of the jobs overseas and send others to a non-union facility in North Carolina. The Teamsters say they plan to fight the plans. The battery plant in Fennimore has been open since 1970. Energizer hasn’t publicly announced any plans yet.
A Wisconsin News 3 is reporting as of yesterday, Energizer has not filed layoff notices with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development
