The Iowa State Patrol has identified the two people killed in a head-on collision that ended a police chase on Highway 30.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department says shortly after 3:00 Friday afternoon its officers responded to a vehicle pursuit that started near Marshalltown and wound through a total of four counties. The suspect reportedly fired at pursuing officers, striking a patrol car. Police tried to spin the 2019 Chevy Impala out multiple times, but it continued driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 30 until it struck a 2004 Chevy Impala head-on near the intersection of Williams Boulevard and Highway 30 SW. Video of the incident appears to show a police cruiser attempting a pit maneuver, and in doing so pushing the fleeing vehicle into the oncoming car.

Both drivers were killed. They include the fleeing suspect…now identified as 36-year-old Garrett Sager of Grand Island, Nebraska…and the driver of the other vehicle, 16-year-old Kayan Williams of Cedar Rapids.

The incident remains under investigation.
