An Iowa City woman was taken into custody after allegedly hurting the child of her boyfriend, then assaulting the boyfriend.
According to court records, officers were called to the Benton Street residence of 24-year-old Sherlean Roberts at around 12:30am Wednesday. She and her boyfriend have resided together for about seven months, with the man’s child under their care. The boyfriend told police that Roberts disciplined the boy for an incident that occurred at school. She allegedly used a belt on the child, leaving multiple bruises and a cut under his eye.
The couple reportedly got into an argument about a camera that got unplugged. The altercation continued into their bedroom, where Roberts reportedly slammed the door on her boyfriend’s right hand. After the boyfriend pushed the door open, Roberts allegedly pushed the man out of the room, and they fell to the floor and started fighting. Roberts’ boyfriend was eventually able to push her off of him and went to the living room to get away from her.
The man reportedly got a scratch on his right cheek and complained of pain in his right hand from having the door slammed on it.
Roberts was taken into custody and charged with child endangerment causing bodily injury and domestic assault causing injury. If convicted on both counts, she could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested between the couple.
