Area transient accused of threatening victim with knife

An area transient was arrested early Wednesday after assaulting a victim on the Ped Mall.

The incident reportedly occurred at 2:20am on the 100 block of East College Street. According to police, 46-year-old Charles Smith assaulted the victim by hitting him in the face, pulling a knife on him and making threatening statements.

Smith was allegedly intoxicated, due to slurred speech, excitable emotions, and statements from the victim and a witness. He declined chemical testing.

Smith was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and public intoxication. if convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to 25 months in prison.
