Iowa Athletics to honor Gary Dolphin; name Kinnick Stadium radio broadcast booth in his honor

UI Athletics news release

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa Department of Athletics will honor legendary broadcaster Gary Dolphin for 30 years as the radio play-by-play voice of Iowa Hawkeye Football and Iowa Men’s Basketball by naming the radio broadcast booth at Kinnick Stadium in his honor.

Since 1996, Dolphin’s voice has become synonymous with Hawkeye athletics, bringing fans every touchdown, buzzer-beater, championship celebration, and unforgettable moments. Through his passion, preparation, and storytelling, he has connected generations of fans to Iowa student-athletes, coaches, and traditions while establishing himself as one of the most respected voices in collegiate sports broadcasting.

“For three decades, Gary Dolphin has brought Hawkeye Athletics to life for millions of fans across Iowa and around the world,” said UI Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair Beth Goetz. “His voice has become part of the fabric of Iowa Athletics, capturing some of our most memorable moments while representing our university with professionalism, integrity, and passion. Naming the radio broadcast booth in his honor is a fitting tribute to his extraordinary contributions and the lasting impact he has made on generations of Hawkeye fans.”

Dolphin has called thousands of events during a distinguished career that has spanned some of the most successful eras of Hawkeye athletics. His dedication to excellence and unwavering commitment to the Hawkeyes have made him a trusted and familiar presence on game days for 30 years.

“For nearly 30 years, Gary Dolphin has been far more than the voice of the Hawkeyes,” said Gabe Aguirre, Vice President and General Manager of Hawkeye Sports Properties. “His passion, familiarity, and deep connection to the Hawkeye community have made fans feel as though they were experiencing every game alongside him. His voice and name have become synonymous with Hawkeye athletics, making it especially fitting to name the radio booth in his honor. Dolph is the only play-by-play announcer to call a game from that booth, and we look forward to hearing him there for many years to come. Even when he eventually steps away from the microphone, his name and his lasting impact will remain a permanent part of Hawkeye broadcasts.”

Beyond the broadcast booth, Dolphin has served as an ambassador for the University of Iowa, building lasting connections with fans, alumni, donors, and communities throughout the state. His professionalism, integrity, and passion for the Hawkeyes have left an indelible mark on Iowa Athletics.

The naming of the Gary Dolphin Radio Broadcast Booth ensures that his legacy and contributions to Iowa Athletics will remain a permanent part of Kinnick Stadium and the Hawkeye experience for future generations.
