The Iowa City Community School District school board had voted to fill the vacancy created with former board member Jayne Finch’s resignation via appointment rather than holding a special election.
The vote was 6-1 at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Iowa Media Wire reports Board President Ruthina Malone noted that the last special election, held in 2020, cost the district approximately $70,.000. Information on how to apply to be a part of the board will be posted on the district website this morning.
The deadline to apply will be two weeks from today. September 9th. The appointment would be made on September 15th, with each candidate getting time to deliver a statement before the board votes.
A special election could be forced if electors file a petition with the required number of signatures. The earliest that election could be held would be this December.
The appointed board member will serve in the position until November 2027.
