A Des Moines man was arrested on a Dallas County warrant Friday in connection with incidents in May and June in which he allegedly assaulted a West Des Moines woman in a motel and later injured her in a car crash.
James Noland Mickle, 37, of 6000 Creston Ave., Des Moines, was charged with domestic abuse assault-impending air/blood flow causing bodily injury, first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness, violation of a no-contact order, violation of probation, serious injury by vehicle, second-offense OWI and driving while revoked.
The incidents began May 8 about 6:45 a.m. at a motel in the 7200 block of Lake Drive in West Des Moines, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a fight between and man and woman, during which the man allegedly “struck her head against the wall,” according to court records.
The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that Mickle allegedly “struck her in the face with a closed fist and strangled her until she was nearly unconscious,” according to court records.
The officers observed on the victim “a large bruise on the left side of her jaw,” and “she was bleeding from the mouth, had bruises on her nose and bruising and redness around her neck and upper chest,” according to court records.
Mickle was released May 11 from the Dallas County Jail after posting a $5,000 cash or surety bond.
On June 8 about 10:15 p.m., Mickle allegedly crashed a 2009 Nissan Versa he was operating on U.S. Interstate 80 near the 111 mile marker. The crash seriously injured a West Des Moines woman who was a passenger in the vehicle, the same victim from the alleged May assaults, according to court records.
An alcohol toxicology report later filed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation showed Mickle’s blood alcohol content at 0.097 at the time of the crash,” according to court records.
Mickle was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $28,500 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a hearing July 31 in Dallas County District Court.
Mickle was convicted of first-offense OWI in April in Dallas County District Court.
