Matt Degner is resigning as the superintendent of the Iowa City Community School District.
Degner made the announcement in a letter to district families. He says he’s stepping down after his mother was diagnosed with Stage IV terminal cancer.
Degner has come under fire in recent months after it was learned the Iowa City school district was in a financial crisis from nearly three years of uncounted expenditures and mismanaged spending.
Degner’s final day as superintendent is June 30th. He will then stay with the district as its Secondary School Executive Director.
