An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly stealing items from the Iowa City Senior Center while employed there.
Court records indicate that 22-year-old Darrell Washington of East Washington Street entered the Senior Center on August 31st just after 4:30am with no right or privilege to do so. He accessed the facility with an entry card that allowed him to be in the building, but only during working hours.
Police say Washington spent over 45 minutes at the Center and took a variety of electronics valued at over $3500.
Investigators executed a search warrant at Washington’s residence and located evidence of the theft. Evidence was obtained that put him at the Senior Center at the time of the burglary and found that he took a photo of one of the stolen items at the time of the theft.
Investigators believe Washington was likely committing thefts over a long period of time while employed at the Senior Center.
A warrant for Washington’s arrest was issued Monday, and he was arrested Tuesday. He’s been charged with 2nd degree theft and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.
Washington was placed under supervision of the Department of Correctional Services and will be arraigned at a later date.
