Trial date set for suspects in April Ped Mall shooting

A trial date has been set for the suspects in last April’s shooting on the Ped Mall that left five bystanders injured.

Judge Justin Lightfoot on Friday set a trial date of January 26th for 18-year-old Damarian Jones and 18-year-old Ka’Mari Dozier, both of Cedar Rapids.

Jones faces five counts of Attempted Murder, three counts of Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, two counts of Willful Injury Causing Bodily Injury, and one count of Going Armed With Intent. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 170 years in prison.

Dozier is charged with five counts of Accessory to Attempted Murder and one count each of Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, and Rioting. He could face a prison sentence of up to 136 years, if convicted.

Jones is accused of firing a gun six times on the 100 block of East College Street during a large fight at about 1:45 on the morning of April 19th. Dozier allegedly provided Jones with the gun. None of the five people who were injured was involved in the brawl.

15 other people…including three juveniles…have also been charged in connection with the incident. Ten are from Cedar Rapids, and one each are from Marion, Dubuque, and Burlington.

Lightfoot also set a case management conference for November 20th.
