The way the Hawkeyes ended their season reminds us of the game that defined their season. Nearly three months ago Iowa built a double digit lead against Iowa State, but their offense sputtered and their defense gave up big plays. Sound familiar?
It’s been an odd season for a team that came into 2024 with high expectations. Despite scoring 21 points in the first half, Brendan Sullivan and company struggled to move the ball and scored just three points in the 2nd half. Mizzou came roaring back, and converted late in the fourth to take a 27-24 lead late. A failed QB sneak on 4th and 1 ended Iowa’s season.
Win or lose this was the end of the road for the Hawkeye seniors who have to leave Nashville and their college careers on a sour note.
“You got so many other guys out there, and you and see how hard and how much they give to the game and to this this team,” Deontae Craig said. “That’s why this sucks so much, you want to go on top.”
“I think we left the jersey in a better place. And for any guys out there that want to be a Hawkeye, this is why you come to a place like this. Some team might lose in a bowl game and it might not mean anything, but hearing that it’s the end of the road is something I can’t even comprehend.”
“Castro told me that I’m currently unemployed, which is a little scary,” Jay Higgins said. “I’m not a college student and I do not have a job. Rent still due at the first of the month. I have to try to feed my family and pay the bills.”
Iowa’s now lost nine straight games to ranked opponents. With many starters leaving on the defensive side of the ball and uncertainty at quarterback, there’s many questions that will need to be addressed this offseason.
