NUNN CAMPAIGN: Sarah Trone Garriott Is Lying About Her Record on Girls’ Locker Rooms and Surgeries for Minors

The campaign of combat aviator and U.S. Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03) released the following statement in response to Sarah Trone Garriott’s latest ad, which claims she opposes letting men into girls’ locker rooms and opposes gender surgeries for minors:

“Sarah Trone Garriott has spent this campaign running away from her radical record, and the more she talks about it, the more her story changes,” said Nunn Campaign Manager Brendan Duffy. “She can’t hide the fact she voted against keeping boys out of girls’ locker rooms in Iowa schools, against protecting kids from sex change surgeries, against fairness in girls’ sports, and led a bill to start sex ed in kindergarten. If Trone Garriott won’t even stand by her own votes and her own legislation, she has no business asking Iowans to trust her to stand by them.”

Trone Garriott’s votes in the Iowa Senate:

  • Girls’ locker rooms (SF 482). The bill required school restrooms and changing areas to be used only by students of the corresponding biological sex. Trone Garriott voted no. Bill text and history HERE. Roll call, Senate Journal pp. 531–532, HERE.
  • Gender procedures on minors (SF 538). The bill prohibited puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and sterilizing and genital surgeries performed on a minor to alter or affirm the minor’s perception of their sex. Trone Garriott voted no. Bill text and history HERE. Roll call, Senate Journal p. 534, HERE.
  • Girls’ sports (HF 2416). The bill required school athletic teams to be designated by sex at birth and limited girls’ and women’s events to female students. Trone Garriott voted no. Bill text and history HERE. Roll call, Senate Journal p. 430, HERE. Then-State Senator Zach Nunn voted yes on the same roll call.
  • Instruction beginning in kindergarten (SF 66). Trone Garriott was a co-sponsor of legislation that would require sexual education in kindergarten through sixth grade. Bill text and sponsor list HERE.
