A North Liberty shoplifting suspect reportedly told police he had too much money in the bank to steal.

North Liberty Police were called to Aldi on Highway 965 just before 2:15 Saturday afternoon. They were shown video of 57-year-old Steven Van Abbema purportedly scanning items at the self-checkout and putting them in bis bag, but never actually paying for them.

Investigators confronted Van Abbema at his Zeller Crossing residence, where he allegedly claimed he had $20,000 in the bank and therefore had no reason to steal.
Van Abbema is charged with 3rd Degree Theft and Trespassing. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.

Van Abbema was trespassed from Aldi on September 6th.
