An Iowa City Community School District committee will begin work today on redrawing attendance boundaries after getting approval from the school board to expand the scope of their work.

The Gazette reports in a 6-1 vote this week, the board approved changes to the ad hoc Attendance Boundary Analysis Committee’s work, striking language that would limit the committee’s scope to cutting between $3-to-$5 million in costs. The changes also expand the committee’s analysis from just elementary schools to secondary schools as well.

This comes as the district works to cut spending by $32.5 million over the next four years.

Board member Mitch Lingo, who voted to approve the changes, said cutting only 3-to-5 million dollars in buildings would still leave over $27 million that would need to be cut in programs or staff.

The Boundary Analysis Committee will meet Thursday night at the Educational Services Center to begin work on the task at hand. They’re expected to bring a recommendation to the school board in February that could include closing schools, redrawing attendance boundaries and changing what grades would be attending school buildings.

The meeting, which starts at 6pm, is open to the public.
