Cedar Rapids firefighters knocked down an overnight fire Wednesday that trapped residents.

The incident occurred just before 3am on the 200 block of 31st Street NE when crews were dispatched on report of a fire in an apartment building with victims trapped.

Upon arrival, heavy fire was showing through the front entrance door of the two-story apartment building. Two people were reported trapped inside. Crews were able to rescue them from the rear of the structure while attacking the fire. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control.

The Fire Department says 12 people lived in the apartment building; due to extensive damage to half of the building, some were displaced. No damage estimate was made available.

It’s unknown whether smoke alarms were working at the time of the fire, which remains under investigation.
