The City of Coralville is asking the Iowa City Community School district to commit to a long-term lease for the competition swimming pool they’re constructing as part of the new Rec Center, now that Iowa City is no longer able to contribute $14 million to the project.

Coralville hopes to break ground on the new center in March.

The Gazette reports Coralville City Administrator Kelly Hayworth said the city will be unable to build the competition pool without a financial commitment from the Iowa City Community School District.

Hayworth told the Gazette he could not provide any details on the long term lease, but said a number has been provided to the school district.

Currently West and Liberty high schools have a combined swim team and practice at the current Coralville Rec Center. They say the new rec center-with a planned 20-lane competition pool with spectator seating, a leisure pool and a community lap pool-will allow each school to have its own swim team.

The Iowa City School Board will be meeting Tuesday at 6pm at the Educational Services Center on North Dubuque Road to discuss the proposal. Hayworth said he would like to get a decision from the District by the end of the month.

The meeting is open to the public.
