The search committee looking for a permanent director to run the University of Iowa’s Center for Intellectual Freedom have advanced several applicants, including interim director Luciano de Castro.
The Gazette reports he’s among 62 individuals who have applied for the position. The center, which is designed to stand independent from the university, still will require all UI undergraduates to take at least two Center for Intellectual Freedom courses to graduate.
de Castro has complained about the lack of cooperation from the University, and his struggle to have more control over spending, hiring, courses, policies and bylaws.
The board advanced other candidates of the 56 applicants who requested to remain anonymous and be discussed in closed session — although board officials did not provide The Gazette with a specific number who are still under consideration.
A spokesperson for the hiring committee said they don’t have future meetings set at this time, but will be working on that soon.
