Iowa City Fire Department responds to residential fire on Broadway Street

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Broadway Street Wednesday morning.

The blaze was reported in a three-story apartment complex at 1956 Broadway St. at 7:52 a.m.
A news release from the ICFD indicates firefighters arrived on the scene less than four minutes after being dispatched and encountered heavy smoke coming from the third floor of the building. Inside, firefighters located a bedroom fire inside a unit. All occupants had safely exited prior to the fire department’s arrival.

The fire was brought under control eight minutes after arrival. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. Four occupants of the primary unit and three occupants of an adjacent unit have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The fire, which caused an estimated $60,000 in damage, remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal.
