The Story County Conservation Board named Ryan Wiemold as the new conservation director, effective Aug. 23.
In his new role, Wiemold will oversee spending of funds from the 2024 Story County Water and Land Legacy Bond (SCWLL) and its identified projects – several of which are slated to break ground within the month.
“Ryan has an unmatched understanding of our organization, our natural resources and the needs of Story County residents,” Christine Laumer, chair of Story County Conservation Board, said in a news release. “He’s been key in advancing transformative projects, and brings a thoughtful vision for how conservation can continue to enhance the health, well-being and quality of life of our community. The board is confident Story County Conservation is in excellent hands under his leadership.”
Wiemold is taking over after former Conservation Director Michael Cox resigned to work at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Wiemold, of Gilbert, served as the parks superintendent for the past 10 years and has been involved with Story County Conservation for the past 16 years.
He began his career as a seasonal park aide in 2007 before graduating from Iowa State University in 2008. Since then, he served in roles including conservation technician, park ranger and parks superintendent.
During this time, Wiemold led major projects like the development of Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor, Hickory Grove Park’s lake restoration, Dakins Lake park expansion, McFarland Lake project and numerous land acquisitions, according to the news release.
