A semi driver was arrested over the weekend after crashing his vehicle and determined to be driving while under the influence.

The incident occurred just after 2:20am on 250th Street in North Liberty. A Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a report of a single vehicle accident involving a 2021 Kenworth semi.  Upon arrival, he made contact with the driver, identified as 52-year-old Burton Bailey of Tempe, Arizona.

He reportedly smelled strongly of ingested alcohol and showed significant impairment when field tests were administered.  Bailey told the deputy he didn’t feel okay to perform further tests, and consented to a PBT showing his breath-alcohol level over the legal limit.  A subsequent Datamaster test showed it at .213 percent.

A check of Bailey’s driving history showed a previous conviction for OWI while driving a commercial motor vehicle in 2020 while in Arizona.

Bailey was charged with OWI second offense and could face up to two years in jail if convicted.
