The City of Cedar Rapids has released crime statistics for July, and the numbers are generally good.
Of the seven categories, six show an improvement over last year at this time. There’s been only one homicide this year, down from two last year and well below the five-year average of 5. Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Theft from Vehicle, and Theft of Vehicle also showed significant reductions from the year so far in 2025. The only category that went up is Shots Fired, which has seen 23 incidents this year compared to 19 in 2025. Stiil, that’s well below the five-year average of 49.
The Department said investigators were able to make a significant arrest in July of two juveniles who were connected with a string of burglaries from vehicles on the west side of the city. Their method of operation was simple-attempting to open doors or reach through windows of unsecured vehicles and grabbing items of value. While they said the arrest is helpful, the Police stressed being vigilant and removing valuables from your vehicle when possible, and locking your vehicle when it’s not in use.
