Mahaska County’s William Penn University invested $13,717,045 in athletically-related financial aid for college students in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
This is a 13.1% increase compared to the previous year, when the county invested $12,124,214 in college sports aid.
There were 511 male and 277 female student-athletes who competed for one or more sports teams representing William Penn University in 2024. Male students received 5.5% more financial aid on average than female students.
Male basketball players generally receive the highest average financial aid, followed by football players, according to Research.com. Among female athletes, ice hockey players usually receive the most.
Athletic scholarships typically cover only a small portion of college costs and are awarded to a select few students.
Scholarship hopes are a major motivator for many young athletes, according to Archrival’s Future Sport report. The firm said 71% of the student-athletes it surveyed reported playing competitive sports specifically to earn a college scholarship.
