The University of Iowa has issued a travel alert for the July 4th weekend.
Three major events will be taking place in the Iowa City and Coralville communities next weekend that are expected to have an impact on parking and driving commutes to and from the following events:
- July 3-4: Savannah Bananas (Kinnick Stadium)
- July 3: Big & Rich Concert (Morrison Park, Coralville)
- July 3-5: Iowa City Jazz Festival (Downtown Iowa City)
The Savannah Bananas will be hosting a pair of sold-out events that start at 7 p.m. (CT) at Kinnick Stadium on July 3 and July 4. Parking lots open at noon each day. Fans are encouraged to arrive early.
Due to the Big & Rich concert in Coralville, fans attending the Savannah Bananas event the evening of July 3 are encouraged to exit the area via 1st Avenue in Coralville to avoid post-concert traffic from Big & Rich.
Those attending Big & Rich in Coralville are encouraged to access Interstate 80 by driving west on Highway 1 towards Coral Ridge Mall.
Individuals should also be aware of the Iowa City Jazz Festival held downtown Iowa City, which starts at 5 p.m. on July 3 and 11 a.m. on July 4. Iowa City’s fireworks show will begin at approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 4.
Individuals not attending these events are encouraged to avoid these areas, if possible.
Also, the UI Nite Ride service will begin later than usual on Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, due to increased traffic related to the Savannah Bananas game.
Campus Safety will work to minimize disruptions. Service is expected to be fully operational by about 11 p.m. on both nights.
