This week we celebrate 250 years of America’s founding. When we adopted the Declaration of Independence and launched a revolution against the most powerful empire on earth, we did more than just declare our opposition to taxation without representation.
Our forefathers were also rejecting a system in which distant rulers made decisions about our everyday lives. We set out to create a country that shapes our own destiny. A nation that values liberty, prosperity, and consent of the governed.
250 years later, America is a place where your freedoms come from God, not government. But as Benjamin Franklin once said, it’s “a Republic, if you can keep it.”
Because Republics like ours are the exception in human history, not the rule; the promises of 1776 were never guaranteed to endure. The liberties we enjoy today were won at Yorktown, extended at Shiloh, and defended on the beaches of Normandy. Each generation of Americans has carried the responsibility of passing this nation on stronger than it was found.
That responsibility falls to us today: to preserve self-government, defend liberty, and put Americans First.
Representation is not merely sending someone to Washington who shares your party affiliation or repeats the right slogans. True representation means ensuring that the government reflects the interests, priorities, and values of its people.
So while we enjoy our 4th of July and America’s 250th anniversary, let’s reflect on what we need to do this year to keep America… America.
