Leaders in the Iowa City Community School District will be exploring new guidelines for technology use in the classroom.
A newly-released survey of over 2300 respondents showed families and staff want less screen time, stronger safeguards, and more device use to enhance teacher-led instruction.
A recurring concern centered around students already spending too much time on screens both in and out of school. Many of those surveyed suggested barring elementary and middle school students from bringing school-issued Chromebooks home and leaving them exclusively for classroom use. However, others said the devices help students organize assignments, communicate with teachers, and keep up when they’re absent or traveling.
It was also suggested that the District impose stronger website blocking, and tighter controls on games, streaming, social media, and AI tools.
The district is planning a committee consisting of district and building staff along with community members to plan the next steps.
