City of Iowa City news release

The Iowa City Emergency Services Youth Camp returns this summer!

The Iowa City Fire Department, Iowa City Police Department, Iowa City Animal Services, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Community Violence Intervention, and Johnson County Emergency Management will host the youth camp this summer. Registration opens June 1, 2026.

The free, one-day camp for rising junior high and high school students will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Center Park Lodge, 579 McCollister Blvd., and the Iowa City Fire Department’s Training Center, 3810 Napoleon Lane. The Training Center is located across the street from the Terry Trueblood Recreation Center and both locations are accessible via Iowa City Transit.

This informative and inclusive camp is designed for students with an interest in public safety, want to learn more about emergency services, or are just looking for a fun, hands-on camp this summer. Topics may include introductions to various emergency service agencies and their associated emergency response equipment (fire hoses, high-angle rescue equipment, ambulance and medical equipment, police equipment and vehicle, animal shelter). Topics are not all-inclusive and are subject to change.

How to register

Registration forms can be found online: junior high and high school. There is no fee to attend; however, attendance will be capped and filled on a first come, first serve basis. This camp is eligible for new camp participants who have not attended a previous Emergency Services Youth Camp.

Participants are asked to include contact information for their parent or guardian when registering.
