The Taylor County Board of Supervisors is in the process of creating a data center committee for Taylor County. The committee would cover data centers, solar energy, battery storage, and mineral rights.
At the regular meeting on May 7, they amended their moratorium on wind energy to include solar energy, battery storage, data centers, and mineral rights. The formation of this committee was started because of a meeting that a supervisor attended where data centers were discussed. Data centers are large facilities that store huge amounts of data. There are several in Iowa currently with more being planned. The Board of Supervisors felt they needed something in place to keep them from coming to Taylor County. Other surrounding counties are also working on something similar to help protect their county.
The Board will approve the committee at their regularly scheduled meeting on May 14, but they would like the county attorney, auditor, assessor, sanitarian, IT person, supervisor and engineer to be on the committee from the county level. They also will speak with SIRWA, a power company, and two private citizens to round out the committee.
