A suspect in an Iowa City convenience store burglary is accused of skipping a court appearance.
22-year-old Isaiah Scott is accused of failing to appear at a Friday case management conference. A warrant has since been issued for his arrest.
The owners of Up In Smoke Liquor and Tobacco on Broadway Street found over $5,100 missing from a deposit bag on the morning of August 10th, 2025. A review of surveillance video allegedly showed the store was burglarized just after 1:30 that morning while it was closed.
The video showed a thin male believed to be Scott using a key to unlock the front door and enter the business. Once inside, he went straight to the deposit bag and took the cash. He then left the store just over a minute after entering and fled south toward the apartment complexes on the 2000 block of Broadway Street.
Scott, who was living with an Up In Smoke employee on the 2000 block of Broadway Street at the time of the incident, allegedly admitted to committing the burglary by stealing the employee’s key to get in. Scott is charged with 2nd Degree Theft and 3rd Degree Burglary. If convicted on both counts, Scott could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
