The City of Storm Lake is flushing fire hydrants across the community this month as part of its regular maintenance program.
The Water Department is currently working in Zones 2 and 4 and will continue flushing hydrants throughout the city, generally moving from west to east. Weather permitting, the work is expected to continue through the end of October.
The program helps ensure hydrants are functioning properly for fire protection and removes mineral deposits that can accumulate in water mains.
Flushing is scheduled, when possible, to minimize disruptions. Crews generally work after morning traffic and before school dismissal, while downtown hydrants are serviced in the early morning to reduce inconvenience for businesses.
Residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure or notice discolored water after a nearby hydrant is flushed.
The city recommends checking water from the cold water faucet nearest the water meter each morning. If the water appears discolored or has an unusual odor, running the water from that faucet for five to seven minutes typically will clear the condition.
Residents should avoid washing laundry until any discoloration has cleared. If the problem persists, contact Storm Lake City Hall at 712-732-8000.
The city thanks residents for their patience and cooperation during the maintenance work.
