Students find community with Grandma Mojo’s

Grandma Mojo’s is an improv comedy club that performs its comedy sketches biweekly at the Maintenance Shop in the Memorial Union. The students who lead the show have created their own bonds with their audience as well.

“We definitely have a lot of regulars that come back,” Sydney Fogel, a senior studying English and president of the club, said. “I know a couple of people who make an effort to show up. It’s really comforting to know that there are individuals in the crowd who enjoy what we do.”

Grandma Mojo’s has consistently performed at the Maintenance Shop, which has allowed the group a platform to both perform and practice.

“It’s a huge help that we don’t have to worry about finding a venue,” Fogel said. “It’s so nice that we can rely on The Maintenance Shop for our shows and practice as well.”

During their performance, Grandma Mojo’s created interactive experiences, asking the audience what they wanted to see and holding various group activities and sets.

“I liked when they split the crowd into two parties,” Killian Blakley, a first-year student studying architecture, said. “I thought that was really fun to see.”

For members of the improv club like Skylar Burkey, a third-year student studying elementary education, many were inspired by previous performances and wanted to join.

“I have been doing improv since my sophomore year,” Burkey said. “I would go to the shows as a freshman, and I wanted to get involved.”

These events, with help from the Student Union Board (SUB), allow the club the opportunity to perform every other week.

“We’re also immensely grateful for the SUB,” Burkley said. “They provide so much for us, we couldn’t do it without them.”

For students, going to a comedy show is a way to get involved and to find others who share the same comedy style as them. Grandma Mojo’s interactive style of comedy has created an inviting atmosphere for students and comedy specialists alike.

“It’s really accessible,” Killian Blakley, a first-year student studying architecture, said. “I mean, it’s only a buck, and it’s easy to make friends here and get involved.”
