RMC Celebrates First Surgery in New Addition

Regional Medical Center has officially welcomed its very first surgical patient into its brand new surgery addition.

Edgewood resident, Diane Murphy, became the inaugural patient after requiring an emergency surgery. As a retired nurse with prior experience in surgical care in another Iowa community, Murphy brought a unique perspective to the milestone. “It feels pretty good, especially since it was unplanned,” shared Diane. “I worked in surgery at one time, too, so knowing that this was an emergency kind of makes a good christening of the surgical suite.”

“Our entire surgical team is thrilled to begin caring for patients in this beautiful new space,” said Kaleena Bettmeng, RMC Surgical Services Manager. “Handling an emergency procedure as our first case highlights the importance and impact of having a state-of-the-art space for not only our team but most importantly our patients.”

Following surgery, Diane was transferred to RMC’s MedSurg floor for recovery, where the RMC team presented her with a special gift basket to celebrate her place in hospital history. “Everybody has been absolutely excellent,” Murphy added. “I really like this hospital and highly recommend it to anybody. Everything in the new surgery wing is very up-to-date, clean, roomy and very nice.”
