An Iowa City man on the state’s Sex Offender Registry was arrested after an investigation allegedly found him with several unauthorized social media accounts.
Police say they launched the investigation last month on 31-year-old Ashton Allen of Oakcrest Street after multiple offenses were reported. He has been on the Sex Offender Registry since being convicted in 2014 in Linn County.
According to the police report, Allen had an unreported Facebook account, a Facebook Dating account, a WhatsApp account, accounts on Signal and Zoom, and two Linkedin accounts. None of the accounts were not listed on his Sex Registry as required.
A warrant was issued last week, and Allen was taken into custody Monday. He faces six counts of providing false information to the Sex Offender Registry, and could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
