A Des Moines man was arrested after allegedly damaging furniture at a Coralville hotel.

Sunday morning, 22-year-old Armando Serrato of State Avenue was at the Avid Hotel/Candlewood Suites building on Westcor Drive. He was escorted off the property at 7:08am, but police were called back about a half hour later by staff who stated that Serrato re-entered the building through the back door.

Video surveillance footage allegedly showed Serrato taking a knife to five different chairs in the lobby and outside the hotel, ripping the fabric off each of them.

The hotel estimates the replacement cost of the chairs at $5000.

Serrato was arrested. He was cited for trespassing and charged with 2nd degree criminal mischief. If convicted he could be sentenced to up to 5 years in prison.
